Campground
June Lake Campground has 28 campsites in a loop right next to June Lake off highway 58. It sits at about 7,600 ft in elevation, with such stunning views of the Eastern Sierra in Mammoth Lakes, California. June Lake Campground separates into RV/trailer accessible campsites and tent camping sites that lie closest to the water.
Beautiful aspens surround the tent campsites. So, I recommend fall camping at June Lake Campground due to the beautiful imagery with their leaves changing to yellow. But there is no wrong time to camp here…except when it’s closed. ha.
We easily found the camp host who was really friendly, and had an honor system to purchase wood.
The bathrooms were also cleaned daily, and had both running water and flush toilets! There were two porta-potties additionally to the two bathrooms that were open. And the campground itself did not have showers for the guests, however, showers and other amenities were available next door which I explain below.
Campsite
I do believe that I booked the BEST campsite at June Lake! The campsites next to me did NOT have the view of the lake and this one not only had that view, but also had direct access to the lake in front of this site. It was the most ideal spot for me, and I was so pleased with our location.
The campsite itself had a tandem parking spot that really only fit one car. The site sat on soft sand, and was surrounded by aspens. A fire pit, picnic table, and bear box was available in the immediate space. And if I were to be EXTRA critical and choose anything negative, I’d say the bear box was just too far from the parking spot. LOL, only because I am lazy.
What is nearby June Lake Campground?
In the immediate vicinity, you will have the small downtown just a couple minutes away from this campsite. The grocery store is available, and some honorable mentions include the Tiger Bar, and June Pie Pizza co, where we ate both days we were there and found them delicious.
As previously mentioned, June Lake was a maybe 20 yards away from this campground, and the June Lake Marina resided also right next door. This is where showers were available for a small fee, a small grocery store, and ability to rent out water equipment like kayaks, boats, and paddle boards.
Just up Highway 58, you will find more lakes to explore—Gull Lake, Silver Lake, and Grant Lake, as well a scenic drive with views of Horsetail Falls.
In addition, more campsite are available as well: Silver Lake Campground, Reversed Creek Campground, RV Park and Cabins at Silver Lake Resort, Gull Lake Campground, Golden Pine RV Park, Oh Ridge Campground, and Pine Cliff Resort.
For my hiker and backpacker friends, Yost Loop trailhead is available, as well as Reversed Creek Trailhead, June Lake Loop, and Gull Lake Loop. Finally, Rush Creek Trail is also a gateway to Gem Lake, Thousand Island Lake, and Agnew Lake as well.
And finally, June Lake is very close to Mammoth Lakes, CA, which is a epicenter for campsites, trails, lakes, backpacking, and more!
How easy is it to book?
Unfortunately, this campground is highly popular and needs to book months in advanced. Reservations open six months ahead of time, and I booked this website at the end of January. By June, there was no availability for July, however, reservation cancellation occur all the time, and I recommend checking reservation.org often and being flexible with your dates in order to book a campsite. But it is SO WORTH IT. IMO.
Final Thoughts
By far, my FAVORITE campground and campsite to stay at and explore! I thought Big Meadow Campground in Inyo National Forest was my favorite location (read more here), but as you can tell, this location has SO MUCH more to offer and is SUCH a central location to so many opportunities for adventure. The camp host was more than welcoming, and I felt at home. I will be returning….IF I can rebook this site again. ha.
