Backpacking: Tips For Being Constipated On Trail

Constipated while on trail makes or breaks a backpacking trip, in my opinion. The bloat and discomfort while wearing a pack with a hip belt potentially kills the joys of the views and the journey.

It happens to the best of us, and the stress of having the urge to go during a precarious part on trail or a section with no privacy is real, amiright? Haha.

You can find my backpacking bathroom gear here

Last year, on a two night backpacking trip I hardly went to the bathroom (except for one sad minor attempt), and this time around I went four times in three days. I am not an expert on gut health and such, but here are my personal 5 tips that I implemented this time around and made a huge difference:

Homemade Oatmeal & Dried Fruit

I made homemade oatmeal with chia seeds and other goodies that were loaded with fiber, protein, and omega oils.

Gut Health

In the days or weeks leading up to your trip, I’d recommend focusing on gut healthy foods to gear your body up for a couple days of crap food. I really felt that made a huge difference to me

Water

I think I drank at least a gallon of water every day I was on trail. How? Every filtering of water I would try to drink a liter, and I would drink a liter of water in the morning before heading out.

Early Dinner

We ate dinner every day pretty much around 6pm and we were in bed before  8pm. I truly feel that it gave our bodies plenty of time to digest calmly and not during physical exertion.

Balance

I have what I call my “flat tummy pills” aka Balance, which is just a natural supplement taken before bed to relieve bloat and help with going potty. Bionic is also a probiotic blend that is excellent for health gut! For more information, you can send me an email or send me a message on my social media account!
