To put it frankly, I was FLOORED by this campsite. The location is at the heart of Mammoth Lakes beautiful scenery, and this campsite is actually lakeside, but at least 100ft away.
This campsite site is near (but not right next to) the bathrooms, as well as the campsite hosts, so it makes it easy for check-in, questions, bathroom needs, and to buy firewood. Bathrooms were kept clean and also had flush toilets, which is always nice.
It is a dog-friendly spot as well! But please adhere to leash rules!
At a walking distance away, there is an equipment shop to rent kayaks, boats and other water gear for your enjoyment. In addition, there are walkways everywhere that lead around the lake, or through scenic routes near the lake. Lake Mary Loop is a popular trail and you can find more information here.
The campsite itself had lots of trees available for hammocks and sun cover. A fire pit, a picnic table, and of course, a bear box was available at this campsite for use. The parking came right up to the campsite which made loading items into the bear box really easy.
Despite the trees and the space, privacy is scarce in this campground and fire pits were situation closer to each other. However, the space in the trees was ample for many tents, personal tables, or games like corn hole. I did have cell signal in this campsite, but it was not good quality and was not consistent.
When I first arrived, I took a wrong turn when arriving so I ended up driving around the entire perimeter of Mary lake before finding my campsite. Lake Mary is a large lake that allows for big water boats and water activities. On the other side of this campsite, there cabins to rent out, as well as multiple equipment rental spots. The scenery is unlike anything I have every seen! Beautiful mountains surround the crystal blue lake!
When I booked this campsite, I booked it two months in advance. At the time, no other dates were available, and I could only stay one night. These reservations open up six months in advance at 7am PST, and they are booked SO FAST, so be ready.
Finally, Twin Lakes, Lake Mamie, Lake George, and Horseshoe Lake are all within walking distance of the lake with lovely walkways and beautiful scenery. Not to mention, heading into town, you will find quaint places to eat and breweries.
If you’ve never been to mammoth, you are in for a treat. In addition to Lake Mary Loop, Devil’s Postpile and Rainbow Falls are in Mammoth Lakes, and are a popular place to visit. To read more about visiting Devil’s Postpile, read this!
In conclusion, this was only my second time coming to Mammoth Lakes and would 12/10 recommend this campground! I have some big plans for the following years to come back to this place—just remember to book as early as possible! And as always, please share, follow, comment if you’ve been to Lake Mary Campground or you know someone who is looking to go! I cannot wait to hear your experiences and thoughts!
