This campground is what I consider a “lucky find” because I booked it after desperately trying to find Yosemite National Park Campsite. I failed miserably and I “settled” on this campsite well outside of the national park. I figured, “well, at least there is a lake nearby.” What a treat to find a beautiful location that I will definitely be returning to!

Campground

The campground is located around the beautiful and scenic Bass Lake in the Sierra National Forest. The road leading to it literally wraps directly next to and around the lake, and the lake is very visible and accessible by foot from the campgrounds. I saw all sorts of wildflowers, and even some wild turkeys roaming around.

The campground’s geographical location is very popular. However, that did not take away from the experience. The nature sounds and the quiet prevailed and most campsites had plenty of room in between each other. The camp hosts resided at the entrance of the campground with firewood, so definitely easy to find.

I did notice that some parts of the campsite were significantly sloped. The bathrooms generally sat uphill from campsites, which at higher elevation may post a challenge to some individuals.

Campsite

Site #110 at Lupine Campground

When we arrived to the campground and checked in with the camp hosts, they told that many people were inquiring whether I had arrived to claim my spot. Apparently, some locals coveted this site believing it was by far the best one. It indeed sat pretty level with a beautiful scenic back drop to the lake, and acquired some isolation on the outer skirts of the campground near the road. This allowed the lake to be within walking distance, and also for three side of the campground to be surrounded by road, rather than other campsites.

I can definitely appreciate a campsite with some privacy, but this one lacked it despite having no immediately neighbors! It definitely was not at all as bad as that sounds, but as you can see in the photo, I felt like a fish in a fishbowl because of the location. Every campsite across the road faced us, and we frequently ran into every walker or passerby near us. Every stray car that came in or out would also encircle our campsite.

This campsite was also very flat which is great for tent set up or unloading equipment. Trees that were present would provide shade if needed, and a picnic table with a campfire grill were also present. There was ample room to include many tents or other equipment. The parking at this location allowed for two cars to park in tandem as well. You could maybe even squeeze them side by side if they were smaller cars.

What is nearby the Campground?

Bass Lake lies directly across the campground and Rd 222 runs around its perimeter with little quaint stops along its route. Across the lake on the north shore, you can also rent boats and other water equipment in the marina. In addition, there are several picnic sites like Pine Slope, Rocky Point, and Pinepoint Picnic Site.

Additional campsites include Spring Cove Campground & Forks Campground along Rd 222.

Casa Velasco Mexican & Ducey’s on the Lake both have 4.5 stars reviews on google maps. Even though I did not have time to try them myself, the reviews are promising!

For any hikers out there, Flume Trail, Glass Rock Trail, Willowcreek Trail, and Mono Trail lie around the perimeter of Bass Lake. Please check All Trails or research online for information on trail conditions.

And finally, as previously mentioned, Yosemite National Park is about 45 minutes from this campground heading north. If you’re in the roadtrip mood, Kings Canyon National Park lies about 2 hours south of this campground.

Accessibility

As a newcomer, I found campground easily with easy access from the road. The entire campground was paved, and we drove right up to the campsite in my car. Like previously mentioned, some areas sloped significantly, and at higher elevation, walking to the bathrooms could be a little more difficult for some folks. Otherwise, the individuals campsites were relatively flat and I had no problems.

Final Thoughts

I am very happy with finding this campsite on a whim! I imagine that at the height of summer, this lake town gets more traffic and this campground may be louder and occupied by more people. However, the lake side location, and the potential of many water-related activities remain abundant. The location highlights the beauty of this area and definitely should not be underestimated.
